Large natural Italian whetstone with coarse grain, the Bergamasca

For honing peened scythe blades. Beginners who have not yet mastered peening will often achieve better results with the Bergamasca than with a fine-grained stone such as the Rozsutec.

 The large Bergamasca does not fit well in the galvanized or copper whetstone holder, but is well suited to the cow horn or the wooden whetstone holder.

Natural whetstones are carried on the belt in a water-filled whetstone holder for frequent maintenance of the edge during mowing. Adding a small dash of vinegar, as was done in the past in certain regions, increases the bite of most natural whetstones and helps keep them clean and functional.
